Makeup Primers – A Beginner’s Guide

Girls have always been skeptical about the usage of this ‘essential’ beauty product. To top it up, a few believe that you can always achieve a flawless base with a ‘good’ foundation.  And finally, after persuasion, even when they agree to buy one, there’s always a difficulty in choosing one because we have so many of these available in the market-oil based, cream based, mineral based and water based to be precise. But believe me, if you know your skin type, everything is sorted out.

But first, what are primers actually? They are nothing but a preparatory coat. Let me explain to you like this. Just when we are about to paint a wall, we first coat it with a layer of plaster so that the surface becomes even, the paint glides on perfectly and lasts long. Same is the function of a cosmetic primer. It converts your skin into a perfect canvas so that you can show your art skills with your makeup brushes.

This product is very functional. You can shoot at a lot of targets with just one arrow in your hand.

  • It consists of particles called optical diffusers which blur out the imperfections
  • Primers go into deep wrinkles and pores and even out the skin surface
  • Boosts radiance
  • Combats with excess oil secretion
  • Fights acne
  • Makes makeup last longer
  • Conceal specific skin functions. If you use a colored primer on your bruises, say a yellow one, it neutralizes the blue undertone. A purple primer removes unwanted yellow undertones in fair skin. Redness is combated by green primers. A peach or orange colored primer can be used to hide dark circles and pigmentation.

Let us see the different areas of application. They are mainly used for foundation, eye-shadow, lips, nails, and mascara. The function remains the same, the area changes.

The first is the FACE: The primer here covers the entire face, just before the application of foundation. Here, choose a primer that matches your skin type. If you have an oily or combination skin, pick up a primer that gives a matte look. You can go for Revlon photo ready primer, L’Oreal base magique or colorbar primer. And if zits and acne are your concern, have a product that contains salicylic acid. It works wonders. People with dry skin definitely need hydration, so go for something which is heavy duty. It will work as a primer, serum, and a moisturizer. 3 in 1. Lakme blur perfect primer will suit this skin type perfectly. The ones with normal skin, congratulations, everything will work for you!

Did you know? You can also use certain moisturizers as a primer. The one that I’ve loved the most is the Lacto calamine

The other product that is easily available in markets and can be efficiently used for the same purpose is an aloe vera gel. But make sure you take only a very small amount or else it might leave your skin feeling oily and sticky.

One tip – If you want to create a look where your skin appears to glow from within, then (apart from drinking lots of water) apply a luminous base before a foundation and witness magic.

How to apply face primers – Step one is to wash your face clean. Then go for a toner and then a moisturizer. Now, wait for 4-5 minutes before applying the primer or else the product will slip away and will affect foundation application as well. Always remember, never apply products back to back. It does more harm than good. Give at least a minute or two before the second one. Then, take a raisin like the amount of the primer, rub it between your fingers gently and apply. You can also use a sponge or a foundation brush for the same. Blend it in the outward direction starting from the nose. Make sure you cover each and every part of your face.

Next in the line are your EYELASHES. The mascara primers are generally transparent but then, there are exceptions as well. My personal favorite is the L’Oreal Paris False Lash Superstar Mascara. It comes with a super-sizing primer and a lash lifting top coat.

Then we have LIPS. According to me, lip primers are highly underrated. These are very important. It stops your color from fading away and prevents bleeding too. I use the NYX Professional Makeup Lip Primer. And I would definitely suggest you go for this. It has never disappointed me.

Talking about an EYESHADOW base, my go-to product is the NYX Professional Makeup Eye Shadow Base – Skin Tone. It comes in a small pot and is very convenient and travel-friendly. It will instantly intensify the color of your eyeshadow. Sometimes, I use it as a concealer too. If you want to make an eyeshadow base at home, mix your face primer and your concealer in 1:1 ratio and yes, that’s it!

If everyone gets a primer, let’s not leave our NAILS behind. The pigments in a nail paint can affect your nails and can lead to yellowing. So applying a transparent nail paint before the colored one will create a barrier between the two and save you from the side effects of the chemicals.
